Crisp or crumble? I have always been a crisp girl myself, but now that I’ve been playing around with crumbles, I know that the combo of toasty oats and crunchy brown sugar just kind of do it for me. I also love fruit this time of year (dear strawberries, I can’t wait until you are at the peak of ripeness!) and baking it in a bath of sweet sugar brings out all the roasted caramel-y notes that just make fruit that much better.
The best thing about this vegan pear crumble is that it can double as either a dessert or a warm breakfast, especially if you toss in a few extra handfuls of oats and reduce the sugar a bit. Any fruit can be subbed in for the pears, but the firmness of the pears makes for ideal crisp-making and they get really tender and juicy after a bake in the oven. Obviously, plop a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, because you’ve gotta live your life!
How to make vegan pear crumble
Making a crumble is almost as simple as making a dump cake. Simply measure out your ingredients, mix it all together, and bake! The key to making a quality pear crumble is to buy really good pears. If your local farmers market sells them, buy a few of the biggest ones. For this homemade crumble recipe, you want pears that are slightly firm but give a little bit when you press your thumb into them. Another good trick to tell when pears are perfectly ripe is to smell them (ripe pears have the most incredible scent!).
To get the perfect crumble texture, slice the pears so they’re about half an inch thick. You don’t want them to be too thin, otherwise they’ll become too gooey in the oven. And cut them too thick, and the baking time for this crumble will be off. (This all sounds very Goldilocks, doesn’t it?).
This pear crumble recipe calls for four small ramekins, but you can easily multiply the ingredients to make a larger crumble in a baking dish. You’ll likely have to bake the crumble for longer if you use a bigger baking dish, but it’s fairly easy to tell when it’s done baking. Just pull it out of the oven once the top has gone golden and bubbly!
