A perfectly sweet and fizzy kombucha cocktail spiked with the season’s best strawberries, drink up!
Let’s talk about the first time I tried kombucha. It was summer about a year ago and it was high time for me to try it. There are at least 2 local kombucha companies in the area, so it really was turning into a have to at this point, right? Plus, it seemed like EVERYONE on the internets was trying/loving the booch, so it was my time too! I happily picked out a bottle from my local grocery store, plunked it down on the counter and went on my merry way. As I was sipping on the bubbly drink (I got a hibiscus ginger flavor), I was thinking ‘this is great! So great for me, pretty delicious, I think I”m on convert!’ Yep, I kept thinking that, until I got to the last of the bottle.
Before I finish my story, let’s back up a bit. You know how kombucha is made, right? It’s basically a fermented drink that is made from something called a SCOBY (I know, IT’S GROSS) that you grow and cultivate until it’s big enough to use to brew a batch of fizzy fermented tea. Please go look at a picture of the SCOBY, then come back and finish the post, it will just complete the picture so much better for you. Anyway, I was sipping on my kombucha, going about my business, when I was just about done with it. I took the last swig and then realized something was very very wrong with that last pull of the drink because it was slimy as all get out (cue, major face making and trying to spit it out as fast as possible). I didn’t realize that a piece of the SCOBY was in the bottom of the drink and guys, I HAD SWALLOWED IT. I know it probably wasn’t harmful at all, but the sensation of drinking the last swig of a drink I thought I loved now was too much, as I pranced around my kitchen trying to get that weird texture out of my mouth, I swore I was never ever going back to kombucha. No way, no how.
Well, fast forward about a year and here I am, back on the kombucha train ( I promise, even after that story, don’t be scared!). I found a brand I love and now I’m all about that fizzy hippie drink, with and without booze. I don’t usually keep fizzy things around the house, but now that I’ve found my love for it again, I discovered that it’s a perfect mixer for a kombucha cocktail. I also made a batch of strawberry infused vodka, so it ended up being a perfect combination to ring in the warmer weather. Just take my advice, check the bottom of your kombucha bottle before swigging away, I don’t want you to end up missing out on it like me!

Yesss I love the ‘booch, but that weird stuff at the end of the bottle is a NO GO for me. I haven’t messed with it too often in cocktails, but I need to get on that train. Sadly my grocery store doesn’t sell kombucha, but I get it sometimes on the weekends at our local health food store (but it’s like $4.50 a bottle). Your cocktail sounds perfect to me!! These photos are also looking great, lady!! 😉

Thanks love! Man, I know it’s an expensive habit, which is why I’m sad I got started on it!

I love, love kombucha and am completely addicted. I know brew my own because it was just too expensive to keep buying. This cocktail sounds fantastic! I need to mix up a ginger batch for this purpose!

I home brew kombucha. I have not ventured into cocktails yet. Great idea!! Two of my favorite things combined. I always strain my ‘booch before I drink it.

I still haven’t made my own, but I need to!

I soo laughed at swallowing the piece of the scoby–perhaps that could be a new handover cure (aren’t they always drinking something gross in a gulp?). I too am working on cultivating a taste for kombucha–getting there but vodka would help things move faster 😉

Oh gosh, I think I would rather be hungover at that point! Vodka does usually make things easier to stomach, right? 🙂
