Let’s talk about the first time I tried kombucha. It was summer about a year ago and it was high time for me to try it. There are at least 2 local kombucha companies in the area, so it really was turning into a have to at this point, right? Plus, it seemed like EVERYONE on the internets was trying/loving the booch, so it was my time too! I happily picked out a bottle from my local grocery store, plunked it down on the counter and went on my merry way. As I was sipping on the bubbly drink (I got a hibiscus ginger flavor), I was thinking ‘this is great! So great for me, pretty delicious, I think I”m on convert!’ Yep, I kept thinking that, until I got to the last of the bottle. (more…)
Are you a whiskey lover or a whiskey hater? For a long time, I was NOT a whiskey fan (hello college+too much whiskey, yuck!), but within the last few years I’ve found that I actually enjoy a nice whiskey or bourbon, especially in baking. Otherwise, my absolute JAM for cocktails was an Amaretto Sour, for the longest time. My best friend suggested it on the night of my 21st birthday and from then on to my late 20’s, it’s been a favorite. It was so delicious and easy to order, perfect! Since then, I’ve moved on to my go-to cocktail being the Old Fashioned (holler at you Wisconsin!), among all the craft beers we have here in WI. I was going to call this “End of Summer Sangria” but I’m holding onto this season a bit longer, ok? Let’s not talk about the sun going down earlier yet, because I’m just now quite in the headspace for that nonsense. I had one of the best dinners of well, ever a few weeks ago while in Northern Wisconsin. The location was gorgeous, the food simply outstanding and the cocktails were out of this world. One of my favorite cocktails was one I had the first time we went (yes, went more than once, a sign of an amazing meal!), called the Lemon Crush. Just about every cocktail on the menu was a cocktail creation from the liquor gods themselves.
While some of the ingredients are a little out of the ordinary (um who is keeping elderflower liquor around everyday?), this lemon cocktail was totally doable to recreate. At first, I wasn’t quite sure how to approach this lemon spiked elixir. After a few tries with different flavors of sorbet and various spirits, I had it! Taking a sip of the recreation took me right back to vacation time.
The flavor of this lemon cocktail is sweet+tart+boozy, the perfect cocktail trifecta. While this would be perfect as a happy hour or dessert drink, it would also pair perfectly with a salad or light pasta dish. If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, feel free to stir up the cocktail in a glass, just be sure that the sorbet melts a bit before adding the sparkling wine. No matter what you drink it with, it’s a perfect compliment to the approach of the end of summer.
