The easiest homemade vegan chocolate sauce recipe! Made with only 2 ingredients and endless uses. Drizzle on a scoop on ice cream, dunk your favorite snack, or stir into your coffee!
Chocolate sauce or chocolate syrup? My friends and I recently had a debate on the difference between chocolate sauce and chocolate syrup and we landed on very different moons.
I’ve always known chocolate sauce as something you’d dip a churro versus chocolate syrup as something you’d use to make chocolate milk. My hot take is they’re a little different, but for the most part, interchangeable.
If you want to put creamy chocolate sauce on your ice cream and chocolate syrup on your cereal, far be it from me to stop you! Also, chocolate is chocolate. So, just like, dump it on whatever you want.
Regardless, today I’m giving you my absolute favorite homemade chocolate sauce recipe! It’s smooth and creamy and everything you’d hope it would be. With only two ingredients, it’s a super easy chocolate sauce recipe to make and takes very little time and effort. My kind of recipe!

What chocolate chips are vegan?
If you’re looking for a vegan chocolate sauce recipe, then this is it! It’s as simple as buying vegan or non-dairy chocolate chips. There are even some vegan chocolate chips out there that are completely allergen-free, in case you have to watch your intake of other ingredients.
Speaking of allergen-friendly, you’ll all be happy to know that this is gluten-free chocolate sauce! Just one of the many benefits of eating chocolate sauce.
Here are some options that you can find in-store or online with ease:
- Enjoy Life Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
- Simple Truth Organic Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
- Lily’s Semi-Sweet Baking Chips
- Nestle Toll House Simply Delicious Semi-Sweet Morsels
- Artisan Kettle Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
- Equal Exchange Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
How do you make chocolate sauce from scratch?
When you make chocolate sauce from scratch, it’s not as scary as it sounds I promise. I feel like ‘from scratch’ tends to loosely translate into ‘really really difficult.’ But with this chocolate sauce recipe, it’s so so easy. I love it because it’s smooth and creamy. The best part? It’s only two ingredients and takes 10 minutes tops.
Here’s my all-time favorite chocolate sauce recipe:
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup full-fat coconut milk
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions:
- In a saucepan over medium heat, stir together the coconut milk and chocolate chips.
- Continue stirring until the chocolate has melted and sauce is smooth and creamy.
- Allow to cool slightly before storing.
How can I thicken chocolate sauce?
If your chocolate sauce is a little runnier than you’d like, don’t sweat it! There are a couple of things you can do to rectify it. The first and easiest quick fix: let it cool! This chocolate sauce recipe will thicken once removed from heat since coconut milk tends to react in different temperature states. Science, guys.
Another trick to try is to make sure you’re using more of the solid part of the coconut milk and less of the runny part on top. I’ve found if I use only or most of the liquid part of the coconut milk, it tends to thin out the chocolate sauce just a bit.
If you still really want to goop up your chocolate sauce (no judgment here) you can always try adding a little cornstarch to the hot mixture. Start out with a little and go from there because a little goes a long way and you don’t want to throw off the entire consistency of your delish chocolate sauce!
How do you make chocolate sauce less bitter?
People with the sweetest-of-all sweet tooth — this one’s for you! If you feel like your chocolate sauce could be a little sweeter, you could try making it with milk chocolate chips instead of the semi-sweet next time! Or, there’s always the option of adding a little sugar if you already made up a semi-sweet chocolate chip version.
Personally, I think that the semi-sweet chocolate chips make for the perfect amount of sweetness in my chocolate sauce, but that’s totally up to you!
What goes good with chocolate sauce?
EVERYTHING. Jk. Broccoli with chocolate sauce sounds disgusting. But I have to admit, there are many, many foods that can be enhanced with even a drop of creamy chocolate sauce. Here are a few of my fav things to smother in chocolate sauce:
- Ice cream
- Churros
- Fruit
- Cake bites
- Marshmallows
But don’t think you can’t throw some savory items in your chocolate:
- Pretzels
- Potato chips
- Pistachios
- Bacon
- Mozzarella
- French fries
How long does homemade chocolate sauce last in the fridge?
One of the amazing things about this chocolate sauce recipe — other than the fact that it’s freaking delicious — is that you can store it in the fridge for up to two to three weeks! I love remembering I have some chocolate sauce to dunk a cookie in for some extra pizzaz — and you will too.
