I never really realized the true value in shopping local produce until this past year. I always just kind of assumed that produce was available year around (hooray!) and if it’s cheap, why bother? When we moved to Milwaukee a few years ago, I started to realize how lucky we are to live in a place that has so many farmer’s markets, and good ones to boot. Ranging from the usual staples, to all the varieties of tomatoes you could ever want and a taco truck selling off to the side, our farmer’s markets have quite a few options. After going to my favorite farmer’s market a few times and meeting/talking with the producers of the fruits and veggies  I was buying, I realized how much more I enjoy eating and cooking with it, rather than just picking it up from the grocery store and hoping that it’s ripe. It also doesn’t hurt that there is a very cute older gentleman who sells corn and sings the oldies while he does it, so really I go for the cute sellers and good plants. (kidding, but he is sweet!)
So now, we come to these peaches! I excitedly bought a bag of peaches at the grocery store last week, envisioning biting into them and getting a nice sweet, juicy mouthful of peach goodness. Instead, I was saddened to find out that they were all semi dry, not ripe and just plan duds. Nottttt quite dreamy. I needed to make something that would salvage this semi-good batch of peaches, so booze seemed like the logical solution. My mint plant is starting to wilt with thirst from the hot heat here and I had an open bottle of sweet red wine that needed to be used (leftover wine? I know, I’m ashamed), so peach wine slushies were born. Feel free to sub out your favorite sweet or dry wine, but I prefer mine on the sweeter side, so I used one a had on hand. I also tossed in a few ripe nectarines to give the wine slushies a little more flavor, but use whatever fruit you have on hand! Also, drink them fast because they melt in this hot August weather, so I think this drink really calls for a patio party, in my opinion.

Hi Abby,
Wow, is wine slushy really a thing, or did you just make that up? Either way, it’s pretty brilliant. Like you, I was also completely unaware of things like growing seasons until recently. Now I really enjoy eating with the seasons. Conveniently, I bought a whole bunch of peaches and nectarines just yesterday!

Oh it’s a thing! 🙂 I originally found out about them from a winery in my hometown and they are dang good!

You’re right that produce is so much better when you eat seasonally. Plus, food that I procured at the farmers market stays fresher a lot longer in the refrigerator since it didn’t spend any time getting trucked in or on a grocery store shelf.
This looks like a delicious way to drink peaches!
The Frosted Vegan says
Agreed! I tend to eat it faster too, so that’s even better!

Hooray for fresh, seasonal and LOCAL produce Abby!! There is nothing like it. I found over the years of eating seasonally and locally, processed food just does not do it for me anymore. I got a big smile on my face the other day when my husband finally validated this through his comments after going against the grain for several years… he gets it now! Eating out too… when we do go out, we try to make sure it’s a restaurant that supports local farms. We have one right down the street! It’s fun too, supporting local farms/community and knowing where you food comes from. These slushes are peerrrfect for Summer Abby! Love the flavor combo and how easy they are to whip up. I’ll use my boxed wine for this… a keep a box of white in the fridge… always on the ready! Thank you my dear!

You are my kind of lady, boxed wine in the fridge, ready to go! 🙂 I agree, it feels so good to support local farms and growers, plus it tastes better too! xo

I do the same thing with un-ripe fruit! I turn them into smoothies or baked goodies or blend them up with booze. It is always a shame when you want to sink your teeth into a ripe, drippy peach and it turns out to be s dud. But these slushies? Magnifico!
The Frosted Vegan says
It’s perfect, right?! Let’s share slushies and be friends, ok?
